The Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI), led by President Yeong-Soo Han, co-hosted the 2025 Global Symposium with the Korea Development Institute (KDI) on Friday, March 7, at the JW Marriott Hotel. The symposium was held under the theme “Asia-Pacific Regional Solidarity for Overcoming Crises in Transitional Law and Economics.”

The event brought together legal scholars and policy experts from across Asia to discuss the development of legal education systems suited for the era of digital transformation and to explore interdisciplinary trends in law and economics.

The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Choi Jung-Yoon, Director of the Center for Basic Legal Education Research at KLRI, under the title “An Integrated Approach to Law and Economics: Recent Trends and Limitations in National Policy Research by Korean Think Tanks.”

In her presentation, Dr. Choi emphasized the increasing importance of integrating legal and economic perspectives in national policy-making. She highlighted the growing role of economic analysis in designing legal frameworks, particularly in areas such as emerging industry regulation and sustainable development. She also addressed the methodological limitations currently faced by Korean national research institutes and stressed the need for deeper interdisciplinary collaboration.

Following the keynote address, presenters from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan participated in in-depth discussions on their respective national approaches to integrating law and economics.

Meanwhile, KLRI established the Center for Basic Legal Education Research in January 2025 to reaffirm the academic foundation of legal studies, expand its base, and nurture the next generation of scholars. The Institute is also building a long-term roadmap for sustained foundational legal research and is preparing legal education materials and programs for the general public.
