Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI, President Kye-Hong Kiim) held the 2021 K-LAW Forum under the theme of Current Issues in Korean Legal Studies and Education virtually for two days from July 8 (Thur.) to July 9 (Fri.).

This year marks the 10th anniversary of K-Law Forum which has been held regularly since 2012. K-Law forum serves as a place to discuss key issues related to Korean law with researchers from leading foreign institutions in order to enhance their understanding of Korean law and promote it to the world.

This year’s K-LAW forum had three separate sessions based on three regions of Europe, Eastern US, and Western US and Hawaii. Korean law researchers around the world participated in vigorous discussion following presentation sessions. The forum was broadcast live at KLRI’s YouTube channel in an effort of preventing the transmission of COVID-19. The forum has brought much attention of domestic and foreign participants who showed their interest in the event by involving live chat.

Marking the 10th anniversary of K-Law Forum this year, the forum started with the opening speech of KLRI President Kye-Hong Kim which followed by congratulatory messages from two former KLRI presidents Yoo-Hwan Kim, Professor at Ewha Womans University's Graduate School of Law, and Ik-Hyun Lee, Vice President of Mokwon University.

President Kim said in his opening speech, “Although we are holding the K-Law Forum virtually for two years in a row due to COVID-19, it is grateful that the development of technology brings us together online to discuss with experts in other parts of the world. I’m looking forward to vigorous discussion today.”

Professor Yoo-Hwan Kim said in his congratulatory message, “It is amazing to see the 10th anniversary of K-Law Forum which started as Global Korea Law and has grown to its status.” He continued saying, “I hope that KLRI puts more efforts to develop K-Law Forum so that it can contribute to spreading the unique experiences of Korea to the world.”

Vice President of Mokwon University Ik-Hyeon Lee said in his congratulatory message, “I believe that K-Law Forum will grow to a global platform where we can develop Korean legislation by working with the developed countries and also use to contribute to the development of the world based on our experiences. I hope that KLRI continues in supporting K-Law forum to expand its scope and areas.”

The K-Law forum had the following invited speakers: Professor Pablo Sanz Bayon (Comillas Pontifical University), Professor Birgit Daiber (Seoul National University), Professor Robert J. Rhee (University of Florida), Professor Jeong-Ho Noh (Director of the Center for Korean Legal Studies at Columbia University), Dean Lincoln Davies (Ohio State University), Professor Sung-Eun Kim (UC Irvine), and Professor Tae-Ung Baik (Director of the Center for Korean Studies at University of Hawaii, Chair-Rapporteur, UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances).

The main topics of the Forum were Fundamental Freedoms in the Kor-EU FTA, Research and Policy on Technology Law and Digital Business, Lessons Learned in Teaching US Law and Studying Korean Law, North Korean Human Rights Protection under US and Korean Laws, Conducting Legal Research Internationally, Comparative Characteristics of South Korean Real Property Law, and Mandating Corporate Board Diversity. The forum can be found at KLRI’s YouTube Channel (http://youtube.com/KLRIofficial).

Meanwhile, KLRI has been working to improve the status of Korean law and to introduce Korean law to the global society in a systematic and professional way by including Korean law lecture in the curriculum of foreign law schools and providing overseas law scholars, government officials and legislators with Korean law training.
