KLRI held the 2021 Seoul International Forum on Translation and Interpreting-REPLAY

Korea Legislation Research Institute (President Kye-Hong Kim) held the 2021 Seoul International Forum on Translation and Interpreting-REPLAY virtually from August 2 (Mon) to August 8 (Sun). The 2021 Seoul International Forum on Translation and Interpreting was initially held on July 15 (Thur) under the theme of Ethics and Professionalism in Translation and Interpreting jointly with the National Assembly Library and Ewha Research Institute for Translation Studies. The forum was successfully done with more than 1,000 translation experts from 15 countries.
 
The forum ran two parallel breakout sessions in which total 16 presentations were made. The 2021 Seoul International Forum on Translation and Interpreting-REPLAY in August was taken in place as a number of translators and interpreters had requested an opportunity of watching the forum once again.
 
The forum started with two keynote speeches by Anthony Pym (Professor at University of Melbourne, Australia) and Cornelia Zwischenberger (Professor at University of Vienna, Austria). Following after the keynote session, interpreters and translators with various regional, academic and practical experiences and knowledge made presentations under the topics of Legal Translation: Practice and Ethics, Translation and Interpreting: Education and Certification, Ethics and Professionalism in Translation and Interpreting, and Paradigm Shift in Translation. The forum welcomed its special guest speaker Yun-Hang Lee, Director of Office of Language Services of the US Department of State, who had interpreted for the US president Joe Biden at the recent Korea-US summit as well as for former US presidents. She spoke on the status and policy of interperting and translation of the US at the Special Conversation Session of the forum which draw much attention of the audience.
 
Sang-Mo Lee, Director of KLRI’s Legal Translation Center, spoke on Approach to Translation of Legal Norm through Paradigm Shift at the Breakout Sessino 1-A, stressing out the importance of a right approach to translation that would show the difference from other types of translation after taking into consideration of legal system and hierarchy. He also emphasized that a perspective in translation, legal validity of translated version, and authoritative interpretation are important elements to keep in mind in translation. 
 
KLRI translated approximately 2,200 Korean statutes into English and provides the English-translated versions through its webpage (http://elaw.klri.re.kr) and mobile app. The webpage is visited by about 220,000 users a year who are interested in Korean law including foreign experts, major institutions, universities, investment firms, officials from overseas missions, and ordinary citizens.
