Korean Legislation Research Institute Hosts Legislative Policy Forum on 'Legal Policies for Energy Transition'

On Tuesday, April 30th, the Korean Legislation Research Institute (KLRI, President Yeong-soo Han) held the 60th Legislative Policy Forum on 'Legal Policies for Energy Transition' at the Rose Room (5F) of the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas, starting at 7:00 a.m. The keynote speaker for the forum was Chairman Lee Jong-young of the Electricity Regulatory Commission.
  
Chairman Lee Jong-young, recognized as a leading authority in the field of energy law, serves as an honorary professor at the Graduate School of Law at Chung-Ang University and has held positions such as Chairman of the Energy Policy Committee at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Chairman of the Regulatory Reform Committee. Additionally, he has served as President of the Korean Environmental Law Society and the inaugural President of the Korean Energy Law Society, and has been actively engaged in research activities in the fields of energy and the environment, including publishing books on energy law.
  
During the forum, Chairman Lee Jong-young delivered a presentation on the current challenges and policy responses in the era of energy policy, such as the expansion of global energy supply chain risks, the obligation to achieve global carbon neutrality, and the standardization of carbon reduction norms. He also discussed legislative policy challenges and responses to address these issues.
  
Furthermore, he elaborated on legislation related to hydrogen, distributed energy, offshore wind power, and energy transition. Particularly, he emphasized the need for expansion and promotion of wind power generation and introduced the government's plans to expand renewable energy. He pointed out the current lack of specific legislation for wind power generation projects, which are currently governed by multiple individual laws, highlighting the associated challenges.
  
The Korean Legislation Research Institute regularly hosts Legislative Policy Forums, inviting experts from various fields to share legislative achievements, explore new legislative issues, and foster legislative outcomes. Previously, experts such as Chief Justice Ahn Cheol-sang, Director Lee Wan-gyu of the Legislation Bureau, and Director Hwang Jong-sung of the National Information Society Agency (NIA) have attended and presented on diverse topics.
