KLRI held the 17th Unification Law Forum

Korea Legislation Research Institute (President Kye-Hong Kim) held the  17th Unification Law Forum under the theme of Comparison and Evaluation on the International Sanctions on North Korean Economy on June 11 (Fri., at 10.30am) at the Mozart Hall of President Hotel (31st fl.).
 
The conference was designed to analyze the reality of the current strained division between South and North Korea and explore alternatives to overcome the situation. Domestic experts in North Korean issues and related legislation participated in presentation and discussion sessions of the conference. 
 
KLRI president Kim said in his opening speech, “I hope to see a breakthrough in the relations not only between South and North Korea but also between the international society and North Korea. To this end, we need to consider what we can do and continue developing and implementing agenda for the future.”
 
Bo-Hyun Ham, attorney at a law firm Life, analyzed sanctions against North Korea implemented by the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Japan, and suggested on the evaluation and prospects of sanctions. In particular, Ham pointed out the restricted role of the Korean government in the situation with international sanctions and the tense relations between North Korea and the US. The attorney also stressed out that individual sanctions on each activities should be avoided just for the excuses of the special relationship between two Koreas or the peace of the Peninsula and that we should actively seek a way to exchange and cooperation with North Korea. 
 
KLRI has been operating the Unification Law Forum since 2016 to enhance its ability to respond to issues in the unification legislation and contribute to its development through in-depth exchange of opinions. As of 2021, the Forum became quarterly. Previous speakers of the Forum include former Unification Minister Yeon-Chul Kim, Chairman of Gaeseong Industrial District Foundation Jin-Hyang Kim, and Deputy Dean of the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia Natalia Prisekina.
