KLRI Holds Joint Seminar with National Assembly Library and National Assembly AI Forum

The Korea Legislation Research Institute (President Yeong-soo Han) held its 10th joint seminar with the National Assembly Library and the National Assembly AI Forum on the topic “Current Status and Challenges of the Framework Act on Artificial Intelligence” at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, Small Conference Room 1, starting at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, June 17th.
  
Marking its 10th anniversary this year, this seminar is an annual event jointly hosted by the KLRI and the National Assembly Library since 2016. This year, the National Assembly AI Forum newly joined as a co-host, adding further significance.
  
The seminar featured active discussions on major domestic and international issues surrounding the enactment of the Framework Act on Artificial Intelligence, legislative trends, and future response strategies.
  
The opening ceremony proceeded with an opening address by Jeong-geun Hwang, Head of the National Assembly Library, followed by an encouraging speech by Won-shik Woo, Speaker of the National Assembly, and welcoming remarks by President Yeong-soo Han and In-seon Lee, Member of the National Assembly from the People Power Party. This was followed by a keynote presentation by Kyung-jin Choi, President of the Korean Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law, titled "The Framework Act on Artificial Intelligence: A Harmonious Solution of Innovation and Regulation for an AI Superpower."
  
Thematic presentations followed: Professor Kwang-soo Kim of Sogang University Law School on "Key Contents, Issues, and Future Tasks of the AI Framework Act"; Associate Research Fellow Kee-won Ra of the KLRI on "Legislative Trends and Implications in the US, UK, and Canada"; and Professor Hye-sun Yoon of Hanyang University Law School on "Approaches in the EU, China, and Japan and Korea's Direction."
  
The comprehensive discussion featured participation from Attorney Tae-eon Koo of Law Firm Lin, Hyung-gun Kim, Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the KLRI, Mi-sa Park, Researcher at the Korea Law Information Service, and So-yeon Shim, Legal Researcher at the National Assembly Library. They shared diverse perspectives from industry, academia, and legislative research, and discussed future directions for legal system improvement.
  
Yeong-soo Han, President of the KLRI, stated, “Establishing a balanced legal and institutional foundation is essential for the sustainable and trustworthy development of AI technology,” adding, “We hope this seminar serves as a meaningful opportunity to diagnose the core issues of the AI Framework Act, examine legislative cases from major countries, and explore the direction for the development of our legal system.”
