A Joint Conference on ‘Global Trend and Implications on Cryptocurrency Regulation’ between KLRI and KILA

Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI, President Kye-Hong Kim) held a joint conference with Korea Internet Law Association (KILA) under the theme of ‘Global Trend and Implications on Cryptocurrency Regulation’ at Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Conference Room 2) on May 28 (Fri., at 2pm).
 
The conference was designed to discuss legislative alternatives to solve the continuous user damage caused by theft of encrypted assets, market price manipulation, or unfair trade practices through hacking.
 
The presenters at Session 1 and 2 were Jung-Mi Han (Director of KLRI),  Seung-Wook Bae (Senior research fellow at Korea Venture Investment), Joon-Young Kim (Attorney, Kim & Jang Law Office), Chang-Min Cheon (Professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology), and Sung-Po Ahn (Professor at Jeonnam University).
 
Jung-Mi Han, Director of KLRI’s Department of Innovative Legislation Project made her presentation as the first speaker of the day. She presented on the trend of cryptocurrency regulation including the status of legislation on virtual assets and the controversy over the acknowledgement of virtual assets. She stressed out that a discussion on the direction of business regulation should be taken place after acknowledging risks of regulatory vacuum. 
 
General Discussion in Session 3 had 6 discussants namely Professor Ji-Won Seon (Gwangwoon University), Dr. Jong-Joon Park (KLRI), Professor  Seung-Young Yoon (Korea University of Foreign Studies), Professor Pil-Woon Jeong (Korea National University of Education), Professor Seung-Young Cheong (Changwon University), Dr. Yong-Hyuk Jo (KLRI, Director of Regulatory Legislation Research Center).  
 
KLRI carries out legislation research for regulatory innovation in order to promptly overhaul regulations that hinder the growth of new technologies and industries and to legislatively support regulatory innovation in major industries. KLRI has been building up a network with experts in various ways including a joint academic conference with Korea Internet Law Association.
