KLRI Hosted a Joint Seminar with National Assembly Library

Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI, President Yeoungsoo Han) held a joint seminar with the National Assembly Library on July 13 (Thur.) at 13:30 pm under the theme of ‘Connecting Laws across the World with Intelligence – Using AI Generated Machines in the Legal Field.’
  
This seminar is designed to foresee and discuss legal and ethical issues which could be created by the structural changes by generative artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT in the legal field. 
  
The seminar was started with the opening speech by the Chief Librarian of National Assembly Library, Myoung-Woo Lee which were followed by the welcoming remarks by KLRI President Yeoungsoo Han and the congratulatory remarks by the National Assembly Speaker Jin-Pyo Kim.
 
Director of the KLRI Center for Legal Translation Hyung-Gun Kim moderated the keynote session and two keynote speakers presented. Professor Andrew Perlman at Suffolk University, spoke on the topic of ‘The Implication of Generative AI for Legal Services Society’ and Senior Judge at the Seoul High Court Min-Koo Kang spoke on ‘The Era of Generative AI<GPT> and the Proper Response of Legal Professions.’
 
The next presentation sessions had presentations on the topics of ▲ Generative AI and the Future of Law and ▲ ChatGPT and Legal Translation.
 
The first session was moderated by Sun-Ha Song, head of the National Assembly Library's Law Library Coordination Division. Two presenters presented about ‘Trends of Generative AI Technology and Cases’ (by Yoo-Cheol Kim, Head of AI X Division of LG AI Institute) and about ‘German Legislative Cases for Introducing AI-Based Legal Services’ (by Jin-Ae Park, National Assembly Library’s Information Service agent).
 
The second session under the topic of Legal Translation and ChatGPT was moderated by KLRI Senior Research Fellow Kwang-Dong Park. Two presenters, Jae-Wook Lee Attorney at Yulchon and Professor Jun-Ho Lee at Chung-Ang University presented about ‘Review on the use of ChatGPT in Legal Translation – with a focus on the actual translation cases.’ 
 
Finally, Chung-Ho Lee and Il-Jae Lee, professors at Kwangwoon University presented about the ‘Technical Approach to Apply ChatGPT to Legal Translation.’
 
KLRI President Han said, “Generative AI may present an opportunity to improve work accuracy and efficiency in the legal field, but it also create many challenges. I hope that the seminar provides an opportunity for the legal field to bring about innovation with the use of generative AI.”
 
Meanwhile, KLRI started a legal translation project in 1992 to promote Korean law to the world and has provided English version of approximately 2,300 Korean laws at its webpage for the public.
