KLRI held the 2023 International E.S.G. Joint Conference

Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI, President Yeoungsoo Han) held the 2023 International E.S.G. Joint Academic Conference on August 1 (Tue.) at 13 pm at Masil Live Hall of the Seoul Myeong-dong Community House. The Conference was held under the theme of ‘ESG and the Role of State for the Transforming Society: Spread of the Discussion on Urban Commons.’
 
The conference, under the theme of urbain commons, was co-hosted by Korea Legislation Research Institute, Korea Research Institute of Human Settlements, Seoul National University’s Asian Urban Social Center, and Jeju National University's Joint Resources and Sustainable Society Research Center. KLRI has been cooperating with these four institutions since 2021 to disperse the discussion on interdisciplinary exchanges and cooperation and to discover new tasks. 
 
The conference had two sessions of presentations and discussion under the themes of ▲ Transforming Society and States (Session 1) and ▲ Sustainable Society and Urban Commons (Session 2). The third session was a comprehensive discussion in a round-table style. 
 
Session 1 had Michel Bauwens and Beom-Cheol Kwon as speakers. Michel Bauwens, the founder of the P2P Foundation spoke on ‘The Vital Role of Urban Commons for Ecological Resilience and Social Pacification’ and Beom-Cheol Kwon Chief Editor of Culture/Science spoke on ‘States Commons: Commons as Policy and Commons as Power.’
 
At Session 2, Tom Armstrong, CEO of the Co-operative Housing Federation of British Columbia (CHFBC) in Canada presented under the topic of ‘Building the Urban Commons Through Cooperatives and Community Land Trusts.’ He was followed by the next presenter, In-Kwon Park, Professor at Seoul National University, who spoke about ‘Urban Commons as Space of Embracement: Case of Common Land of Seoul Keyongeui Line.’
 
Discussants at Session 1 and 2 were Bae-Kyun Park, Head of SNU Asian Urban Society Center, Seo-Hyun Park, Professor at Jeju University Joint Resource and Sustainable Society Research Center, Ki-Bin Hong, Director of Global Politics Research Center, Soo-Jeong Seo, Senior Research Fellow at Architecture and Urban Research Institute, Jong-Bin Kim Vice President of The Ham SD, and Seong-Jin Yoon, Senior Research Fellow at Korea Research Institute of Human Settlement.
  
At Session 3, Choi Yoo-kyung, KLRI’s E.S.G. Legislation Team Manager explored cooperative measures to share research on urban commons internationally. Hyun-Soo Kang, Professor at Chungbu University, Ki-Ryeong Park, KLRI Senior Research Fellow, and Gye-Soo Lee, Professor at Konkuk University discussed together with the participants.
  
Day 2, August 2 (Wednesday) had a group discussion with experts from five institutions including KLRI to develop the discussion of Day 1 to the next level and to draw out implications for domestic situation. 
 
Meanwhile, the 3rd KLRI E.S.G. Colloquium will be held on August 3 (Thur.) at 14pm at the conference room of KRHIS in Sejong. The colloquium will have topics of ▲ Block Chain and Urban Commons (Session 1) and ▲ The Need for Ownership of Equity Shares (Session 2). 
 
This conference and the Colloquiums are linked to the 2021 International Conference on Social Value (Theme: Plan for Utilizing Social Real Estate for Realizing Social Value) held in Sejong City in September 2021 and the 2022 Joint Conference on Shared Resources (Commons) and Social Value Legislation Forum held in Jeju in August 2022. These events will be meaningful places where foreign experts on urban commons meet in person after the pandemic and continue the significant discourse. 
  
KLRI has continued research on the fundamentals and policy for ESG disclosure and sustainable system in the transforming society since 2019. The institute has built a research network for close collaboration and active discussion with the relevant institutions and ministries to institutionalize policies.
